Due to the significant length of long screws, during the heating and cooling process, temperature variations in different areas of the screw create thermal stress, leading to bending. Additionally, material inconsistencies or defects can also cause bending during heat treatment.
In this article, we will introduce solutions to the problem of long screws bending during heat treatment, as well as tips used in our factory.
1. Use Support Fixtures: During heat treatment, use support fixtures or clamps to maintain the straightness of the screws and prevent bending.
2. Control Heating Temperature: Try to control the heating temperature and avoid excessive temperatures.
3. Gradual Heating: Use a gradual heating method to avoid thermal expansion and contraction caused by rapid heating, thus reducing bending.
4. Cooling Control: After heat treatment, adopt appropriate cooling measures, such as natural cooling or controlled cooling, to reduce condensation stress.
5. Select Suitable Materials: Use high-strength, high-hardness materials to manufacture screws to enhance their resistance to bending.
To summarize the above, there are three methods: controlling the temperature for stress relief annealing, improving the strength of the material itself, and providing a supporting force.
Meigesi has found that controlling temperature to reduce stress is quite challenging in practical operations. Additionally, this method demands high skills from technicians and is not very efficient in preventing bending. Therefore, we chose to use support force to maintain the straightness of the screws. As shown in the diagram, we bundle the screws together to effectively prevent bending. This method is low-cost, effective, and requires minimal technical expertise.
If a long screw experiences slight bending, we can use mechanical equipment to straighten it and restore it to its original shape. If the bending is severe and mechanical straightening alone is insufficient, we can heat the screw before straightening and then apply pressure to correct it. In actual production, performing appropriate tempering on bent screws is a common treatment. Stress tempering can release internal stress, thereby reducing bending deformation.
